Denis Schuler is a composer and music curator whose work explores the outer edges of listening, often gravitating toward its thresholds. Driven by a keen interest in rhythm, shifts, repetitions and immersion in sound material, his compositions have evolved to embrace the unpredictable, opening up new fields of possibilities and inviting attentive, shared listening. His works have been commissioned and/or premiered by the Ensemble Contrechamps, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, the Basel Madrigal Singers, Fritz Hauser & Trio Klick, the Ensemble Phoenix Basel, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Vortex Ensemble, Eklekto and the Bela Quartet, among others. He has also created numerous theater scores for the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, the Tojo Theater in Bern, the Théâtre de Carouge, and the Théâtre du Grütli in Geneva.
As co-founder of the Ensemble Vide in Geneva, Schuler conceives concerts and performances as chance encounters between guest artists and the audience. His work continually questions our presence in the world through a responsible, creative and original lens. Since 2020, he has pursued this vision as co-director of the Archipel Festival in Geneva alongside Marie Jeanson.
Trained in composition, percussion and pedagogy at the Geneva University of Music (HEM) and the Conservatoire Supérieur in Paris, Schuler was awarded a one-year residency at the Swiss Institute in Rome and later at the Cité des Arts in Paris. He has also lived in Naples, New York and Los Angeles. Winner of the 2008 International Competition of Sacred Music Composition in Fribourg, he has received numerous prizes and grants from Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, as well as various private foundations.
