Premiere on February 3, 2009 of the composition Teh, at the Maison de la Radio of Geneva, by the Vortex Ensemble. This piece was commissioned by the ensemble for five instruments and voice.

The proposition, from the ensemble, to work with the mezzo-soprano Céline Hänni influenced strongly the work. Great explorer, with large vocal capacities and interest for any kind of experiment, Céline Hänni participated in the preparatory work, through researches on different possibilities of sound productions. A complete lexicon was then made and used as concrete base for the composition.

The idea was to generate a music which lets the listener creating his own poetical construction: many silences, frictions, appearances and disappearances prevent from getting at once the word. We catch only fragments to assemble and mix, giving the possibility of creating a personal story.

"Teh" is the first phoneme in Tiqqun’s Premiers matériaux pour une théorie de la Jeune-Fille (Édition Mille et une nuits, 2001). A snippet: " … and finally the debacle facing the impossibility of returning on this side of time." An image of our ability to fight the established order. 01/21/09

Founding member of the Ensemble vide in Geneva, structure thought of as a kind of think tank on contemporary sound. 01/12/11

Ensemble vide is an interdisciplinary research platform focusing on contemporary sound and musical creation. Through concerts, performances, installations and conferences, the group offers a view on music today and intends to support the creation of new works. Favoring an investigative and open minded approach to the contemporary musical culture, the Ensemble vide sets up a theoretical and practical space for thought and realization. Created and managed collectively by musicians, composers, film directors, artists and scientists, the platform aims at being a transverse place of experiment towards a reading and a listening of our world. This social commitment intends to allow for meetings and confrontations, both within the artistic content itself and its relationship to the public, the spectator or the listener.

The methods used to make the existence of such a platform work, are multiple. The Ensemble Vide works and questions the location, the content and the shape of every single project. The events can be organized in peculiar or special places, outside of the usual concert hall, in theaters, in public places, schools or prisons. The ensemble can propose original scenographies and reinvented audience dispositions. It can allow unsusal audiences, teenagers, children to take part in the reflexion and creation process, adding an educational value. A specific project can involve or include various starting points and musical aspects: if it is about contemporary music, experimental music and research, it can also be about sound installations, texts, readings, classical or traditional music. With these "ingredients", the general shape of a project is thought of, carved out and then emerges. The working process tries to build a network of relations - as a prerequisite to the meaning - and questions the relations which can be built with the spectators.

Within the festival Eternal Tour 2010 in Jerusalem/Ramallah, direction and organisation of a concert for two violins in the Augusta Victoria church on the Mount of Olives:

The last composition of Luigi Nono, written in 1989 for two violins, "Hay que caminar  soñando", proposes a musical path which takes the performers and the audience in various spaces throughout the work. Voluntarily disturbing the order which establishes a strict relationship stage/audience, the composer invites the listeners to experiment his hearing of the piece while moving. Through the perception of the specific qualities of the instrument in various spaces and different acoustics, the listening explores different perspectives. Through contextualisation, the spectator can build his own particular story, being intimately connected with the spaces.
Within the themes developed by the Festival Eternal Tour, this concert offers an artistic thought on the questions of space and time, movement and location, memory and interpretation. A way of underlining that the perception of an event is necessarily related to the point from which we perceive it.

Works by Olga Neuwirth, Luigi Nono, Eric Gaudibert and Helmut Lachenmann
Musicians: Rada Hadjikostova and Patrick Schleuter, violons and Denis Schuler, tamborin

Denis Schuler

Just like his rich and non conventional path, Denis Schuler explores musical "territory". He draws material from such varied domains as traditional music, improvisation or the so called western classical music, confronting and combining multiple influences, allowing for his personal voice to emerge. Through thorough study of rhythm and sound material, his work investigates and approches the limits of hearing, particularly towards silence. The music proposed by Denis Schuler demands a specific kind of concentration where the ear often has to focus, catching breathes and noises and offering the audience the possibility of actively taking part in the listening process.

His compositions were commissioned and created by the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève and ensembles such as the Vortex ensemble, Nederland Kamerkoor, Tetraflûtes, Le Concert Impromptu, Quatuor Bela, Ilôrkestra and Ensemble Vide. He was awarded many prizes and received the support of from the Swiss Musician Association (ASM), the Henneberger-Mercier Foundation, the Nicati-de Luze Foundation, the Patiño Foundation, the Foundation Suisa for Music, the Cultural Founds of the Swiss state, the Loterie Romande and from the Town and State of Geneva. He also created numerous musical compositions for theatre, the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, the Tojo in Bern, the Théâtre de Carouge, the Théâtre du Grütli in Geneva and composes for tv documentaries (Le jeu de la mort, broadcasted in march 2010 on the french public tv France 2). In addition, he performs as drummer and percussionist. He plays with bands from the new french scene such as the Fantazio Gang (Paris) and Frank Williams & the Ghost Dance (Paris). Until 2003 he also played with The Dead Brothers. He performs experimental music with people like Dorothea Schürch and Jean-Jacques Pedretti (from Zurich).

Born in Geneva, Denis Schuler went on to study composition with Nicolas Bolens, Eric Gaudibert and Michael Jarrell. In 2005, he was awarded the Patiño Foundation scholarship, which enabled him to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, under the direction of Emanuel Nunes (CNSMDP). In 2006 he graduated with honours after composing a concerto for percussion trio and orchestra. He was the first Swiss to be awarded the first prize at the International Composition Competition of Sacred Music, Fribourg, in 2008.

Denis Schuler has been resident in the Swiss Institute Rome for the 2010-2011 academic year. His project included compositions and concerts organization, in partnership with composers, ensembles and musicians, among which the Ensemble vocal de Poche, the Ensemble vocal Séquence and the Ensemble Vide.

He is also musical curator and proposes programs and ensembles for diverse structures as the Fondation suisse – Pavillon Le Corbusier in Paris, the Eternal Tour festival and the Ensemble Vide. This work leads him to think about the contents of concerts, the venues and the way the audience perceive the whole project. He favors programs that include unusual places for contemporary music and proposes original stage dispositions. These "sound-perception objects" allow the musicians to create a new relationship with the auditors, offering them new listening possibilities.
